USM Art Department, Art Gallery to present annual Alumni Exhibition

The University of Southern Maine Art Department and Art Gallery will present the annual alumni show, "Transitions: USM Juried Art Alumni Exhibition," opening this month and continuing through March at the USM AREA Gallery, Woodbury Campus Center, USM Portland Campus.
"Transitions" will be juried by Virginia Sassman Rose, founder of Portland's Rose Contemporary Fine Art Gallery. Rose has selected 23 paintings, drawings and prints by seven USM Art alumni in response to a call for submissions.
Exhibiting alumni include: Nora Tryon, class of 1989 (B.A., discipline in painting); Kathi Smith, class of 2003 (B.F.A., discipline in painting and drawing); Jody Desjardins, class of 2003 (B.F.A., discipline in painting); Ellen Hodgkin, class of 2007 (B.F.A., discipline in photography); Michael Connor, class of 2001 (B.A., discipline in drawing); Lis Janes, class of 2007 (B.F.A., discipline in printmaking); and Tyson Jacques, class of 2007 (B.F.A., discipline in printmaking).
"Transitions: USM Juried Art Alumni Exhibition," will be available for viewing from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday-Friday, Jan. 13-March 28, at the AREA Gallery, Woodbury Campus Center, USM Portland campus, 35 Bedford St., Portland; free and open to the public.
"The annual alumni show is a wonderful chance for us to reconnect with past USM art students, who are continuing to develop as artists," said Kim Grant, USM art professor and department chair, in a USM press release. "While many alumni are frequently showing their work throughout the state and the country, this is an opportunity to see all of their pieces together."
There will be an opening reception for the exhibition, 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 16, in the AREA Gallery, Woodbury Campus Center, USM Portland campus. The Best of Show award will be announced at 6 p.m. and artist talks will begin at 6:30 p.m. The opening reception is free and open to the public. In case of inclement weather, the snow date will be the closing reception, 5-7 p.m., Friday, March 28.
Virginia Rose, an art history instructor at Southern Maine Community College and a former adjunct professor of art history at USM, has been an active member of the southern Maine art scene for the past eight years.
