LearningWorks and Wolfe’s Neck Farm to celebrate opening of greenhouse

FREEPORT — A partnership between Wolfe’s Neck Farm and LearningWorks has resulted in a new three-season greenhouse for Wolfe’s Neck Farm’s educational programs, LearningWorks announced in a press release. The two organizations will celebrate the opening of the greenhouse today (Tuesday, July 27) at 10:15 a.m. The celebration will include a presentation by Youth Building Alternatives students and songs by Wolfe’s Neck Farm campers, and will be followed by light refreshments.

“We were delighted to partner with Wolfe’s Neck Farm on this project,” said LearningWorks chief executive officer Ethan Strimling. “Our students gained valuable experience building a greenhouse — a new kind of project for them — while also learning about the environment and the natural world.”

Youth Building Alternatives is a nationally accredited educational program that works with young men and women who have dropped out of high school. YBA provides classroom instruction toward a GED and job-site skills training for future employment. Approximately 24 YBA students built the greenhouse over the course of one month.

The project was funded by a grant from the Quimby Family Foundation. In addition to building the greenhouse, YBA students received environmental education from Wolfe’s Neck Farm staff.
